**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, the thought of fully integrating into university life was intimidating. However, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments. What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered early in my journey was establishing friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may have similar concerns. On my first day in my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too intimidated to meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life here at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, both in the university community and my program.
So, what did I take away from this? I came to understand that making that first move is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be numerous social opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections. Above all, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied student populace, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the coursework. A noticeable increase from A-levels was evident, with an even more substantial shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling like you’re lagging behind.
What supported me during this time was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s likely others are as well. The most pivotal takeaway from my first year is the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching faculty, don’t be shy about reaching out.
### The Value of Staff Support
On the subject of staff, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely desire to see you thrive and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were consistently understanding of our worries. I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more closely, which proved invaluable. Numerous avenues exist for connecting with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself. My primary lesson from this experience is to capitalize on the support offered. You can never have an excess of help!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before embarking on my university journey—and even throughout the year—was largely misplaced. Thanks to the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I learned that I’m never truly isolated. More importantly, I discovered how to blend enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
