**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was inundated with anxiety, ambiguity, and skepticism about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of pursuing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reticent self was used to. However, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, hurdles, and a plethora of enjoyable moments! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Forming Connections: The Primary Challenge

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an aspiring student perusing this, it’s likely something that causes you concern as well. On my initial day settling into accommodations, a few days before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family.

What did I take away from this experience? I came to understand that making an effort at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events tailored to help you connect with others. Most crucially, I learned that being your authentic self is the best approach. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Expectations

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was clearly noticeable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into this new academic setting can sometimes destabilize your confidence. You may observe your peers studying and feel as though you are lagging or inadequately prepared.

What aided me during those trying times was the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s almost certain that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to excel and comprehend the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication regarding any difficulties we were experiencing. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier.

At the onset of the year, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to form connections with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your well-being. My major takeaway from this is to leverage the support available—there’s no such thing as excessive help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. There are an abundance of support systems from both staff and fellow students to assist you in navigating the challenges. I have learned that I am never truly isolated, and I have figured out how to enjoy myself amidst the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
