**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, diving headfirst into this experience was outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all thanks to initiating simple conversations with peers who were equally apprehensive.
So, what’s the takeaway? The secret lies in taking that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Workload
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the intricacies of the material. There was a palpable leap from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can shake your self-assurance, especially when witnessing others studying and beginning to question your own competence.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, there are likely others who feel just as lost. The most vital lesson I learned during my first year is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you’re in need.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of faculty, the teachers in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are very aware of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our issues and providing assistance. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with them earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty more intimately, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your personal benefit. My key lesson from this experience is to take full advantage of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring the university experience.
Looking back, I take pride in my progress, and I’m eager to see where the remainder of my journey at Imperial will lead me.
