**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the cusp of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved person, diving headfirst into this new experience felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I perceive it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of joy. But what specific lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar trepidation about commencing university. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, several days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day isolating myself in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from casual conversations with others in the same boat.
So, what have I taken away from this experience? Taking that first step at the start of the year is vital. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker activities and chances to bond with fellow students. Above all, I’ve learned that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Stress
Another prominent challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the truth: everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well.
The most crucial lesson I gleaned in my inaugural year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from your classmates or faculty, reaching out is vital. Don’t shy away from asking for assistance when you need it.
### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication with us and were always eager to address our concerns. I regret not fully utilizing the pastoral support available until late in the year and wish I had recognized its value earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish better relationships with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With a wide range of support available from both staff and fellow students, those anxious feelings can be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoying university life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
