**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been quiet and introverted, stepping into university life felt like a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I can acknowledge the significant growth I’ve experienced, the obstacles I’ve overcome, and the enjoyable moments I’ve had along the way. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current outlook?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the endeavor to make friends. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s probable that it’s a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all originated from casual conversations with others who were equally unsure.

What did I take away from this experience? I learned that taking an early leap of faith is vital. If you’re not quite at ease or prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events crafted to facilitate connections. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more striking. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can shake your self-esteem, particularly when witnessing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in overcoming this was recognizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, chances are, others are grappling with it as well. The most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year was to seek assistance—be it from peers or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re in need of clarity.

### The Significance of Staff Support

Regarding staff, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the personnel in the Materials department are. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept us informed, addressing our concerns and providing guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had embraced it sooner.

At the year’s start, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff better, which proved to be invaluable. There are many avenues to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this past year has highlighted that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely misplaced. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and fellow students, to aid you in navigating challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying my time while managing the pressures of exams and deadlines.
