**Reflecting on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, plunging into university life felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what exactly have I learned this year, and where do I find myself now?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re reading this as an incoming student, this might be one of your top worries too. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve made some incredible friends. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people who shared my feelings.

So, what did I come to understand? I found that taking that first step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at helping you get acquainted with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is vital. With the diverse range of people in the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests and beliefs.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Stress

Another major challenge was getting used to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your self-assurance. You might observe others studying diligently and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, there’s a good chance it doesn’t for others as well. So, don’t be shy about asking for assistance. This was perhaps the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year—don’t hesitate to seek help from your classmates and the faculty.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of faculty, I must stress how incredible the Materials department staff are. They truly desire to see you succeed and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year was winding down, but reflecting on it, I realize I wish I had engaged it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more deeply with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and it’s among the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself. My chief takeaway from this experience is to utilize the assistance available—you can never have excess support!

### Conclusion

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems are in place, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in overcoming challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to harmonize enjoying university life with the pressures of exams and deadlines.
