**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, plunging into this new adventure felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I perceive it as a time of tremendous personal development, various challenges, and enjoyment. What have I gained from this experience, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you are a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve made some of the closest friends of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with individuals who shared my nervousness.
So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find companions who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear increase in rigor from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more striking. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others study diligently. However, one thing that assisted me was constantly reminding myself that everyone shares similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely others are equally perplexed. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to request help may very well be the most critical lesson of the first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire for you to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until the end of the year, which is something I wish I had embraced earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a brave step by assuming the role of a year well-being representative. This position helped me to connect more with the staff, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and pursuing those connections can be one of the finest actions you take for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully utilize the support available to you. It’s impossible to have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and peers, I was never solitary. I’ve figured out how to juggle enjoyment alongside the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines, and I’ve developed greater self-assurance throughout this journey.
