**Reflecting on My Maiden Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. However, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a time marked by personal development, obstacles, and great enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of beginning university was the search for new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve found a second family, and all it took was a few casual conversations with others who were feeling the same way.
So, what did I come to understand? I learned that taking the first step at the beginning of the year is always worth it. If you aren’t fully prepared or comfortable, don’t stress—there will be countless ice-breakers and gatherings designed to help you meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With the tremendous diversity found throughout the course and university, you’re certain to connect with those who share your vibes.
### Facing the Academic Demands
Another obstacle I encountered was adapting to the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re falling behind. However, here’s what helped me: remembering that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, there’s a good chance others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I gained during my inaugural year—never shy away from reaching out to classmates and staff for aid.
### The Significance of Faculty Support
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and understand the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing any questions or concerns we had. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral care until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by volunteering as a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty more intimately, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to link up with the professors, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to seize the support available to you—you can never have excess support!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was largely misplaced. With the ample support from both staff and classmates, those feelings of apprehension can be effectively managed. I’ve realized that I am never genuinely alone, and I have discovered ways to enjoy myself even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
