**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and ambiguity regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown wasn’t a familiar realm for my shy and introverted nature. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and ample enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: Conquering the Initial Challenge
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. This is a common concern among prospective students, and I was not an exception. On my initial day of settling into accommodations, just prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both within my course and throughout the university.
I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. What did this teach me? It’s essential to take that plunge at the year’s onset. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With a vast array of personalities within the university, you’re certain to find those who align with you.
### Managing the Workload and Scholarly Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the intensity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-level studies, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel engulfed and doubt your skills, particularly when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me in those moments was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If a concept eludes you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. This is perhaps the most significant takeaway I acquired during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Value of Faculty Support
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in consistent contact with us, addressing our worries and providing direction. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner.
At the year’s onset, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to better connect with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous paths to engage with faculty members, and it stands as one of the best decisions one can make for themselves. My main insight here is to leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Insights
In summary, this year has illuminated that the anxieties I experienced before and during university were mostly unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly solitary. I’ve also learned how to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
