**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a journey abundant in personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Making Connections: Taking the Initial Step

One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was making connections. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating small conversations with fellow students who were in a similar position.

What did I take away from this? It’s always beneficial to take that leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Workload: Don’t Hesitate to Seek Assistance

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you see others studying and apparently flourishing. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson I discovered in my first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty without hesitation.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty: An Encouraging Atmosphere

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely aspire for your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us regarding any difficulties we were facing. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts: Surpassing Anxiety and Embracing the Journey

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unfounded. There are abundant support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, that can alleviate those worries. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
