**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quite shy and introverted, plunging into the unfamiliar was not something I was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a time brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what precisely did this year impart to me, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing the same unease I once did. On my first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day retreating into my room, far too intimidated to venture outside and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it took was a bit of small talk with individuals who were in a similar position as me.

So, what did I glean from this experience? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be plenty of ice-breaker activities and chances to mingle with others. Most importantly, I discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter those who click with you.

### Navigating the Academic Load

Another significant hurdle was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a stark increase from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can easily undermine your confidence. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate. But here’s what supported me: reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling with it as well. So, don’t hold back from seeking assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson to absorb in your first year—reach out to classmates and staff for guidance!

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of staff, the faculty in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. Throughout the year, they maintained continuous communication with us, displaying empathy and addressing our worries. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took a chance by becoming a Year Well-being Representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more personally, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best gifts you can give yourself. My key takeaway from this experience? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, those feelings of anxiety can be mitigated. I’ve realized that I’m never solitary, and I’ve learned to balance having fun with the demands of exams and deadlines.
