**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, stepping into the unknown was a challenge for me. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a time enriched with personal development, obstacles, and much enjoyment! But what precisely did I gain, and how far have I come?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Challenge
One of the most intimidating parts of entering university was making connections. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can wholeheartedly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was a little casual conversation with peers facing the same situation.
So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking that initial step at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that staying true to yourself is essential. With a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Managing the Workload
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when you observe others diligently studying. However, one thing that reassured me was the reminder that everyone is navigating this journey together. If you find something difficult to comprehend, it’s likely that others do too.
The most vital lesson I learned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This straightforward action can significantly impact your academic experience.
### The Value of Support
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department staff are exceptional. They genuinely desire to see students thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, there was ongoing communication between students and faculty, and they were consistently receptive to our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I ventured to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect more deeply with the faculty, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with staff members, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My primary takeaway here is to maximize the support that is available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has demonstrated that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With a broad array of support resources from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of fun and relaxation.
Reflecting on my journey, I take pride in the progress I’ve made, and I look forward to what the future has in store.
