**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding the path ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into the unknown was far from my usual environment. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and many enjoyable moments. But what did this year impart to me, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re reading this as a future student, this may also be a primary concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both within my degree program and throughout the university.
I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was a few brief conversations with people experiencing similar feelings. So, what lesson did I take away? I discovered that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is vital. With so many diverse individuals around, you’re destined to find those who connect with you.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can shake your self-assurance. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate.
What aided me during this period was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you struggle to grasp something, chances are there are others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Whether it’s from your peers or the faculty, seeking help is essential.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Regarding faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and understand the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in constant contact with us regarding our issues and hurdles. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s start, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position provided me with a better understanding of the faculty, which has been priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and I strongly suggest doing so. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Reflections
In summary, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was predominantly misplaced. There are numerous support systems established, both from faculty and fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy university life while managing the inevitable strains from exams and deadlines.
