**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity about what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite introverted, plunging into university life felt intimidating. Yet, reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s probably a concern on your mind as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who feel like a second family.
What did I glean from this experience? The essential action is to take that first step. Even if you’re feeling unprepared, there will be a plethora of ice-breakers and activities aimed at facilitating connections with others. And above all, just be authentic. With such a diverse crowd throughout the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Stress
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more striking. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when observing others burying themselves in study. But here’s what aided me: keeping in mind that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well.
The paramount lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help. It’s an essential skill to cultivate early in your studies.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly wish for students to thrive and are well aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open communication, consistently checking on our welfare. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more personally, which was invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to foster relationships with faculty, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these. My main takeaway here is to fully utilize the support that is available—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There exists a multitude of support systems, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you in overcoming the challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoying university life alongside the unavoidable stress of examinations and deadlines.
