**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to initiate my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

### Building Friendships: A Formidable Yet Fulfilling Task

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university often feels overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it could be a source of concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into accommodations, merely a few days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the entirety of the day retreating in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I am proud to claim that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had—both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what lesson did I absorb? I discovered that making bold moves at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, there’s no need to fret! Numerous ice-breakers and events exist to aid you in connecting with others. Most crucially, I realized that being authentic is essential. With such a varied array of individuals at university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked transition from A-levels, and in several ways, an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem—you might observe others studying and feel inadequate.

What assisted me through this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling with it as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to acquire during your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your peers and the staff for guidance!

### Support from the Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Connect

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely aspire for your success and comprehend the obstacles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to become better acquainted with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway from this is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you—you can never have excessive support!

### Concluding Thoughts: Overcoming Anxiety and Embracing Campus Life

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. There are countless support systems available, ranging from staff to fellow students, to assist you in tackling any hurdles. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely isolated, and I’ve mastered the art of balancing enjoyment with the unavoidable tension of exams and deadlines.
