**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt a swirl of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been a bit shy and introverted, diving headfirst into a new situation was unfamiliar territory for me. Reflecting back, I realize that the past academic year has been a period of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my status now?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Hurdle

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a worry for you too. On my first day settling into student housing, a few days ahead of the official start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties.

So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making that initial effort at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not quite prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a vibrant and diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Workload

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being thrust into this new academic landscape can easily shake your self-assurance, especially when witnessing others study intensely and feeling as though you’re lagging behind. However, a helpful reminder was that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something confusing, there’s a good chance that others are too.

The most crucial lesson I learned during my first year is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This is a necessary skill to cultivate early on.

### Aid from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They earnestly want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing any issues we faced. While I didn’t fully utilize the support services available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which has been immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and establishing these connections can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you. You can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt before and during my time at university was largely unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating your challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I have learned how to find a balance between enjoying my experiences and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
