**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and anticipation as I readied myself to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been quite shy, embarking on this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a period of personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the foremost hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re thinking about becoming a student, this could also be a concern for you. I recall my first day in student housing, where I found myself retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

What was the crucial lesson for me? Take that step forward. Even amidst feelings of anxiety or ambiguity, there will be myriad opportunities—ice-breaker activities, social gatherings, and group projects—to meet others. Above all, remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Shifting from A-level studies to university coursework represented another significant challenge. The increase in workload was substantial, and the difficulty escalated notably from the first to the second terms. At times, I questioned my ability to keep pace, particularly when I noticed peers studying rigorously.

What aided me during this phase? Recognizing that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I found a topic challenging, it was likely that others did as well. The most beneficial action I took was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students, professors, or academic support staff. Learning to ask for help early in the year is one of the most essential skills to cultivate.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

One highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly care about students’ welfare and academic achievement. They are aware of the hurdles we face and maintain open lines of communication year-round.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources until later in the academic year, I wish I had pursued them much earlier. Assuming the role of a well-being representative allowed me to foster connections with faculty that proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with professors, and doing so can profoundly influence your university journey. My key takeaway? Capitalize on the assistance available—support is something you can never have too much of.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on the year, I realize that many of the apprehensions I held prior to starting university were unfounded. There exists a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic demands with an enjoyable and rewarding university experience is entirely achievable.

For anyone who is about to begin their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.
