**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting on it now, I realize it has been a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and a myriad of unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the foremost challenges I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your primary worries. I recall my first day moving into student housing—I was so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings as me.

So, what did I glean from this? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most crucially, just be authentic. With such a diverse student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the academic workload and complexity. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying rigorously.

What aided me through this was the realization that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled to comprehend something, it was likely that others were facing the same difficulties. The essential takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from peers or professors, pursuing support is one of the most advantageous skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Vital Role of Support from Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to input. Throughout the year, they engaged in continuous dialogue with us, ensuring our concerns were acknowledged.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the academic year, but I wish I had done so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly fruitful. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of all the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before embarking on my university journey was mostly unwarranted. There are abundant support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate this transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and it is indeed possible to juggle academic challenges while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.

If you’re on the cusp of beginning your adventure at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and seize the opportunities that come your way. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reflecting on an unforgettable first year.
