### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I geared up to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been a bit introverted, entering this new phase felt like a significant challenge. Reflecting now, I realize I navigated through a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re contemplating becoming a student here, this could also be a concern for you. I recall spending my initial day in student accommodation tucked away in my room, too shy to interact with others. Yet, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

What have I discovered? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. Even if hesitation creeps in, you’ll find abundant ice-breaker events and chances to connect with new people. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is filled with a variety of individuals, and you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to the Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university study posed another significant challenge. The academic demands were notably more rigorous, and the leap from the first to the second term was particularly pronounced. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing peers seemingly mastering concepts more swiftly than I could.

What assisted me through this period? Remembering that I wasn’t in this alone. If I had difficulty with a subject, it was likely that others were facing similar struggles. The crucial lesson here was the importance of seeking assistance—whether it be from classmates or professors. Learning to request support early on greatly enhanced my academic experience.

#### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most beneficial elements of my first year was the exceptional backing from the Materials Science department. The lecturers genuinely prioritize students’ welfare and academic achievement, keeping open lines of communication throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later on, I wish I had initiated that sooner. Early in the year, I took the bold step of becoming a well-being representative, which facilitated connections with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and utilizing the available support can profoundly impact your university journey.

#### Key Lessons from My First Year

As I reflect on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university was entirely normal—and often unwarranted. There are abundant support networks available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. Most crucially, I’ve learned how to manage academic challenges while also enjoying university life.

To those embarking on their journey at Imperial: embrace the experience, take risks, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be looking back on an extraordinary first year, just as I am now.
