### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt a mix of anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation about the journey before me. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been more introverted, stepping into this new phase was quite daunting. Reflecting on it now, I perceive a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and cherished moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
The prospect of forging new friendships was one of the most intimidating components of university life. If you are an incoming student reading this, you might share those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too afraid to venture outside and introduce myself. However, looking back now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and it all began with a little small talk with fellow students in similar circumstances. My key insight? Take the first step early. If you’re not feeling ready, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.
#### Adjusting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when witnessing others studying with assurance.
What helped me navigate this was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is puzzling to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether that’s from classmates or professors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
A truly comforting aspect of my program was the remarkable support provided by the faculty. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our queries and providing direction.
Although I did not fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. At the outset, I took a risk by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Utilize all the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Main Lessons from My First Year
In retrospect, this year has taught me that a lot of the anxieties I had before entering university were unwarranted. An abundance of support exists—from both staff and peers—that can facilitate a smoother transition. I’ve discovered that I’m not truly alone and that it is possible to navigate academic challenges while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.
If you are about to embark on your first year, seize the opportunities that await you. Step beyond your comfort zone, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, savor the journey!
