**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was getting ready to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, the thought of fully immersing myself in this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and where do I stand now?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of entering university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely one of your biggest concerns as well. On my first day settling into my dorm, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others who were similarly anxious.

So, what did this teach me? I learned that taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is crucial. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a varied mix of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Confronting the Workload: A Challenging Adjustment

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a marked increase from A-level studies, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes challenge your self-assurance, especially when you notice others studying and feel left behind. But here’s the reality: everyone shares the same experience. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others do as well. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Whether from classmates or faculty, feel free to reach out.

### Assistance from the Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Seek Help

On the topic of faculty, the staff in the Materials department is exceptional. They truly care about your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. Throughout the year, they kept in touch with us consistently, addressing any concerns we had. I didn’t fully utilize the support provided until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build better relationships with the staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and I highly encourage you to do so. My main takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Embracing University Life

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly baseless. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I understood that I was never isolated. I also learned how to juggle enjoying university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

To conclude, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience. I have developed in ways I never anticipated, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead. If you’re about to embark on your own path, remember: take that leap, seek assistance, and above all, be yourself.
