### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had consistently been shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate. I vividly recall moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the start of term and spending an entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet my peers.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with fellow students who were navigating similar experiences.
So, what have I taken away from this? First, making that first move is always rewarding. If you don’t feel ready or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Second, the most important thing is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse cohort, you’re bound to discover others who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting used to the higher workload and complexity of university-level studies. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and grasping concepts more rapidly.
What assisted me during this time was the reminder that everyone encounters difficulties at times. If you’re struggling to understand something, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential thing is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or instructors. Learning to seek help is one of the most invaluable competencies you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Significance of Interacting with Faculty
One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the outstanding support from the department’s faculty. They sincerely care about students’ success and are receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. Early on, I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty. Building rapport with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely beneficial, and there are numerous ways to do this. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial fears were unfounded. The trials of university life—be it academic or social—are significantly easier to handle with the appropriate support. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance stress with enjoyment, even during exam periods.
For those preparing to embark on their university journeys, my advice is straightforward: embrace the adventure, seek support when necessary, and most importantly, be yourself. You are about to embark on a remarkable journey of growth, learning, and lifelong friendships.
