**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been a bit on the reserved side, the idea of plunging into this new phase was daunting. Reflecting on my past academic year, I can see how much I’ve transformed—confronting obstacles, evolving personally, and most importantly, enjoying myself! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Making Connections: The First Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar worries. On my first day at student accommodation, just days ahead of the official term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too hesitant to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals who were equally apprehensive.
What did I take away from this? It’s vital to take that plunge at the onset of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. And above all, just be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and campus, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Trials
Another major hurdle was adjusting to the workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the jump from the first to the second term was even more significant. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and apparently thriving. However, the reality is this: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something doesn’t click for you, there’s a good chance that others feel equally perplexed. The essential lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking help. This might be the most crucial insight I gained during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty for support.
### The Value of Staff Support
On the subject of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, regularly checking on our welfare. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had capitalized on it from the beginning.
At the start of the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and I highly endorse doing so—it’s one of the best choices you can make. My biggest takeaway from this journey? Don’t hesitate to tap into the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has illuminated the fact that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely ungrounded. With the extensive support network from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly on my own. I also figured out how to strike a balance between enjoying life and tackling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
