**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into this new adventure felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, you might be experiencing similar feelings of apprehension. On the first day of my accommodation move-in, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too frightened to step out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with those who were also navigating similar waters.

So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that taking the plunge at the year’s inception is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with peers. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-level studies, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel swamped and doubt your competence, especially when observing others immersed in their studies. However, one comforting thought was the knowledge that we’re all in this together. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, others likely are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This became one of the most vital lessons I absorbed in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Encouragement from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how excellent the Materials department is. The professors and support team genuinely want you to thrive, and they recognize the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication, addressing any issues that arise throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the year’s start, I made a bold choice by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect more with the staff. Cultivating these relationships has proven exceptionally valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and I earnestly encourage taking part. My principal advice here is to leverage the support at your disposal—you can never have an excess of assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

All in all, this year has illuminated the reality that the anxieties I harbored before and during my university experience were largely baseless. An abundance of support systems exists, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring you’re never truly isolated. I’ve developed a knack for balancing the pressures from exams and deadlines while savoring my time here, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.
