**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), and the notion of immersing myself in this fresh chapter was intimidating, especially for someone like me, who had always been introverted and reticent. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period brimming with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting trials I encountered was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student absorbing this, you might share the same concern. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just a handful of days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I have formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, particularly within my program.

What assisted me? It was the straightforward act of engaging in casual conversation with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties as me. So, what’s the key takeaway? It’s always beneficial to take that chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous introductory events and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at university, there are bound to be individuals who connect with you.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the coursework. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more substantial. Being in such a rigorous environment can sometimes undermine your self-confidence, especially when you notice others studying intensely and feel as though you are falling short.

What motivated me to persevere was the realization that everyone is enduring a similar experience. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are grappling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is likely the most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year—never shy away from reaching out for help from your classmates and the teaching staff.

### Assistance from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for your success and fully comprehend the challenges students encounter. They consistently reach out to us throughout the year to address any issues we may have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the year’s inception, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to understand the faculty better, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My primary takeaway here? Fully seize the support that is available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has imparted the lesson that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. With the broad array of support accessible from both staff and fellow students, those concerns can be alleviated. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
