**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, plunging into such a new and unfamiliar experience felt daunting. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and great enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the process of making new connections. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may resonate with those feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast-forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the best friends I have ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with some casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what have I learned? I found that taking that first step is crucial. If you’re not quite ready or comfortable initially, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge I encountered was the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more daunting. Being immersed in such a demanding environment can occasionally shake your self-assurance. You might gaze around and believe that everyone else is managing better than you. But here’s the reality: everyone is similarly challenged. If you’re having difficulty grasping a topic, there’s a good chance others are too.
The most important takeaway from my first year was the necessity to seek help. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, reaching out when assistance is needed is vital.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the Materials Science department is. The instructors and tutors genuinely desire for you to thrive, and they comprehend the obstacles students encounter. They are consistently approachable and regularly check in with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position helped me become better acquainted with the faculty, which has been tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key message? Utilize the support and assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during my university experience was often unnecessary. There are countless support systems established, from staff to fellow students, that can alleviate those worries. I have learned that I am never alone in this journey, and it is indeed possible to relish university life even amid the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
