**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on my first academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?
### Forming Connections: The Primary Challenge
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely something on your mind as well. On my first day settling into my residence, just before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive as I was.
So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that taking that initial step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right off the bat, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others arise throughout the year. Most crucially, I’ve come to realize that the best approach is simply being yourself. With such a diverse community within the course and university, you will undoubtedly locate those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can unsettle your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is in the same position. If you’re having trouble understanding something, it’s likely that others are equally perplexed.
The secret to surpassing this challenge is straightforward: seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson I learned during my initial year. Don’t shy away from requesting help from classmates or instructors. Everyone is there for your support, and asking for help signifies strength, not weakness.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the trials students endure. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral care until late in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect more intimately with the staff, which ultimately proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are plenty of avenues to develop relationships with the faculty, and it stands as one of the best actions you can take for your well-being. My key lesson from this experience is to maximize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
Looking back on this past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to and throughout university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
Ultimately, this year has been a journey of growth, and I’m eager to discover what the future has in store.
