### Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubt, and anticipation as I began my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone naturally shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase was daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current position?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary hurdles I encountered was establishing new friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be one of your main concerns as well. I recall spending my first day in student housing, hiding in my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to today, and I can assertively say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known.
The essential lesson? Take the plunge. Even in moments of anxiety or uncertainty, a multitude of ice-breaking events and chances to meet others will arise. Most crucially, stay true to yourself. In such a diverse student body, you’re sure to connect with like-minded individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
The shift from A-level studies to university coursework was another significant challenge. The workload and level of difficulty surged considerably, particularly between the initial and subsequent terms. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when witnessing others study fervently and appear more assured.
What assisted me in overcoming this? Understanding that I wasn’t the only one facing difficulties. If I struggled with a particular concept, it was likely that others did as well. The best advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from peers, lecturers, or tutors. Mastering the art of requesting support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most delightful surprises of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely prioritize students’ welfare and academic achievements, keeping lines of communication open throughout the year.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Serving as a year well-being representative allowed me to forge meaningful connections with faculty members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My most significant takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never have an excess of help!
#### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I realize that many of my initial anxieties were baseless. The backing from faculty and fellow students was crucial, assisting me in navigating challenges and savoring my university experience even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never alone on this path.
