### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was beset by anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been introverted and cautious, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re considering becoming a student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my initial day in the student residence, the thought of interacting with new people was so daunting that I chose to stay in my room, avoiding social engagement for the entire day.

However, as I write this now, I can assert that I’ve established some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others in similar situations.

So, what have I understood? First, taking that first step is always rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared, relax—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the best approach is to be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and ideals.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-level studies, and an even more considerable shift between the first and second terms. At times, it became easy to feel inundated and question my competence, particularly when I noticed others studying rigorously.

What aided me was the realization that we were all in this together. If I struggled with a concept, likely, others were facing the same difficulties. The key lesson I acquired was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s one of the most effective strategies for success.

#### The Significance of Staff Support

One of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable support from the academic staff. They genuinely care about student success and comprehend the challenges we endure. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication and provided essential advice.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I took the initiative to become a peer well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much help.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I realize that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are so many support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, that no one has to navigate this path alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.

For those about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: take that initial step, seek assistance when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
