### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial, stepping into an entirely unfamiliar setting. As someone who previously identified as shy and introverted, immersing myself in this new experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the year that has passed, I see a journey brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a primary concern for you. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I stayed cooped up in my room throughout the day. Yet, here I am today, able to assert that I have cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

The crucial takeaway? Take that bold step. Though it may be uncomfortable initially, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and avenues to connect with others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to find peers who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another major challenge was acclimating to the demands of the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities as you observe others engaging in study sessions, but it’s essential to keep in mind that everyone shares similar struggles.

If a concept confuses you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most effective course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Developing the ability to solicit help is among the most invaluable skills you can cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the exceptional support from the faculty. They genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to feedback. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care available until later in the year, something I wish I had prioritized earlier.

Early in my journey, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to interact with lecturers and tutors, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university journey. My most significant takeaway? Leverage the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Closing Thoughts

As I look back, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. Support is plentiful, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing academic responsibilities with a pleasurable university experience is very much achievable.

For anyone preparing to embark on their path at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek assistance as necessary, and above all, permit yourself to relish this experience.
