**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, doubt, and enthusiasm as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who has always been somewhat introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, in hindsight, I can see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, you may feel similarly apprehensive. I vividly recall my first day in student housing, where I spent time sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as time passed, I slowly fostered meaningful connections—some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.

What did I take away from this? The importance of taking that initial step is immeasurable. Even if you don’t feel prepared right away, fret not—there will be numerous icebreakers and social gatherings designed to help you mingle with others. Above all, remain authentic. Given the diverse mix of students, you’re bound to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was apparent, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when you notice others studying hard.

What assisted me during this time? Acknowledging that I wasn’t in this alone. If I grappled with a topic, it was likely that others did as well. The most valuable lesson I learned was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Asking for help is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s a crucial part of the learning journey.

### Valuing Engagement with Faculty

One of the most rewarding elements of my first year was the outstanding support from the teaching staff. The professors in the Materials department truly care about students’ achievements and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and are enthusiastic about offering assistance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the finest choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and I highly encourage taking full advantage of these chances. The more support you seek, the more enriching your university experience will become.

### Main Lessons from My Initial Year

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my early fears were unfounded. The support provided—both from staff and fellow students—significantly impacts one’s journey. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic demands with enjoyment.

For anyone getting ready to commence their university adventure, my counsel is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every chance for growth. University is a period of significant change, and while challenges are unavoidable, the gains are undeniably worthwhile.
