### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, ambiguity, and trepidation regarding the path ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Hesitation to Form Friendships
One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was the formation of friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this likely ranks among your top worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day in my room, far too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.
Flash forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with straightforward conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what has this taught me? The most beneficial action you can take is to initiate that first move early on. If you’re not feeling prepared, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find peers who align with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the subjects. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. This transition wasn’t always straightforward, and there were moments when I felt like I was falling behind. Observing others studying effectively can sometimes lead to self-doubt.
What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone faces challenges at some stage. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The crucial point is to request assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Cultivating the habit of seeking help is one of the most valuable skills you can acquire in your first year.
#### The Significance of Staff Support
On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire to see students succeed and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a brave step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect with staff, which proved to be incredibly helpful. There are numerous opportunities to build rapport with professors and support personnel, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that most of the anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. There is an abundance of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating any difficulties. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve also figured out how to balance academic demands with enjoying university life.
If you are about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take that initial step, seek help when necessary, and fully engage in the experience. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated, and you just might have the time of your life.
