**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the future. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new setting felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered early on was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day at the student accommodation, I was so daunted by the thought of socializing that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, avoiding any interactions. However, as the weeks progressed, I slowly began to open up and initiated conversations with others who were similarly situated.

Today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The essential takeaway? Take the plunge and put yourself out there. Even if you’re feeling reluctant, there will be countless icebreaker activities and chances to meet new individuals. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is filled with diverse people, and you are sure to discover friends who resonate with you.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the demands of coursework and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more overwhelming. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I witnessed others studying confidently while I grappled with various subjects.

What helped me navigate these periods was the understanding that I wasn’t solitary in my struggles. If I was confused about a topic, it was likely that others were too. The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or faculty, asking for help is one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most fulfilling elements of my first year was establishing relationships with the teaching staff. The Materials Science department has an array of supportive lecturers who sincerely desire for students to excel. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and actively engage with us to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This experience illuminated the immense benefits of engaging with the staff—they are here to assist, and leveraging their support can lead to significant positive changes.

### Main Lessons from My First Year

In retrospect, my first year at Imperial has demonstrated that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate any hurdles. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it is feasible to juggle academic demands while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.

For anyone getting ready to embark on their own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: seize the opportunities, ask for help when necessary, and above all, remain true to yourself. The obstacles may appear intimidating at first, but with time, you will find your footing and flourish.
