**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been somewhat introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered at the onset of university was the quest for friendship. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a worry you share. On my first day at the student residence, the thought of introducing myself to others was so daunting that I stayed in my room the entire day. Yet, looking at my situation today, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
What was the key takeaway for me? Take that initial leap. Even in times of nervousness, there are ample ice-breaking activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, remain authentic—Imperial is populated with a diverse array of individuals, and you’re sure to connect with those who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the heightened academic demands and complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second posed additional difficulties. There were moments when I was beset by self-doubt, particularly when I observed others studying and felt like I was lagging behind.
What aided me in overcoming this? Acknowledging that I wasn’t on this journey alone. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar issues. My best advice for new students is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or instructors. Developing the ability to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the remarkable support provided by the Materials Science department. The faculty are genuinely invested in the success of their students and are always receptive to feedback. They comprehend the hurdles we confront and actively endeavor to assist us throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Serving as a well-being representative for my year facilitated connections with staff, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with lecturers and support personnel, and I would strongly encourage you to take full advantage of these chances. The greater the support you seek, the more rewarding your experience will be.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that many of the worries I harbored before starting university were unwarranted. With adequate support—from both the faculty and fellow students—traversing university life becomes significantly more manageable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s possible to appreciate the journey, even amidst the stresses of assessments and deadlines.
For those about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, ask for assistance, and embrace the opportunities that present themselves. You’ll evolve in ways you never imagined.
