**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my inaugural year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from being shy and reserved, this new phase was quite daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the foremost challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a primary concern for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, I spent a significant amount of time in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. However, as the year went on, I found myself among some of the closest friends I’ve ever had. Imperial has become a second family, all it took was a few straightforward conversations with others feeling similarly.

What valuable lesson did I gather? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared at once, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be genuine. With such a diverse group of students, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers who share your passions and beliefs.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying diligently. However, one of the most important lessons I learned is that everyone encounters difficulties at some stage. If something confuses you, others are likely experiencing the same thing.

What’s my top advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, asking for support is essential. Learning to request help early can significantly impact your academic journey.

### The Value of Staff Support

A major highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely wants students to thrive and are always eager to listen and assist. They recognize the obstacles we face and foster open communication throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took a plunge by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong connections with staff members. This turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I realize that the fears and anxieties I had prior to starting university were largely unfounded. With the right backing—from both faculty and fellow students—those concerns became manageable. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to navigate academic challenges while savoring university life.

If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and most importantly, relish the experience. It’s a period of growth, learning, and creating lasting memories.
