**Insights on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what awaited me. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar worries. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent an entire day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can wholeheartedly declare that I’ve formed some of the most genuine friendships I’ve ever known.

I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with those who were experiencing the same uncertainties. My key lesson? Embrace that initial leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is a mosaic of diverse individuals, and you will discover your community.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the enhanced complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with assurance.

What assisted me during this time was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The best approach is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Developing the ability to seek support is among the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

A highlight of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always available to discuss any challenges we encounter. They understand our difficulties and maintain open lines of communication to address our worries.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My advice? Leverage all the support accessible to you—you can never overdo it when it comes to help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt before university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Numerous support networks exist, from staff to fellow students, that can help ease the transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own.

This year has taught me how to juggle academic demands with personal enjoyment, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated. If you are about to commence your journey at Imperial, welcome the challenges, seek support, and seize every opportunity.
