**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitations about what the future held. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who naturally leans towards shyness and introversion, embarking on this new journey felt like a daunting task. Now, reflecting on the past year, I see a period marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting facets of beginning university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. I recall my first day moving into student housing—I spent the entire time in my room, far too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I am proud to say that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had.
The primary lesson I took away? Embrace that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings tailored to help you meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a diverse student population, you’re sure to connect with individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another major hurdle was adjusting to the workload and academic rigor. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies, especially when observing others studying fervently.
What aided me during this period was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that your peers are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or lecturers. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s a crucial skill that will serve you well throughout your academic journey.
### The Significance of Interacting with Faculty
One of the most enriching parts of my first year was the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievements. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and proactively engage with us to address any issues.
Although I didn’t capitalize on pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had been more proactive earlier on. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to form connections with staff members. This proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and engaging with them can substantially elevate your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this past year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist in overcoming any challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never truly solitary. In spite of the stress of examinations and deadlines, I’ve also learned how to savor my university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your university path, embrace the journey, take risks, and seek support when necessary. You’ll be astonished by how much you evolve along the way.
