### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been timid and introverted, transitioning into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a path marked by personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and at what point am I now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the significant hurdles I encountered early in my journey was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as a prominent concern. On my initial day in student accommodation, I felt so overwhelmed that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, fast forward to the present, and I’m proud to say I’ve established some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone to engage in conversations with others who were also seeking connections.

The crucial lesson I gleaned? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people await. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student environment, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant trial was coping with the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At points, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others study with assurance.

What aided me in navigating this? Remembering that everyone else was experiencing similar struggles. If I was grappling with a concept, there was a good chance others were too. The most vital action I learned to take was to seek assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Requesting help is not a sign of fragility but an essential step towards achieving success at university.

#### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most precious aspects of my first year was the tremendous support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely want students to excel and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we face and actively strive to assist us.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, enabling me to forge connections with staff. This proved to be remarkably advantageous. There are various ways to interact with professors and academic staff, and doing so can profoundly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I experienced prior to commencing university was unfounded. There exists a wealth of support, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone on this journey, and I’ve learned how to balance academic challenges with personal fulfillment.

To anyone preparing to commence university, my recommendation is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek support as needed, and have the courage to take risks. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reflecting on an extraordinary first year.
