**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always leaned towards shyness and introversion, entering this new stage felt like a monumental challenge. Reflecting now, I can see a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most intimidating facets of commencing university was the quest for new friendships. If you’re a future student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to meet anyone. Yet, looking at where I stand today, I can proudly proclaim that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others in similar situations. My key lesson? Embrace that risk at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless icebreaker activities and avenues to connect with people. Above all, remain true to yourself—Imperial brims with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Transitioning from A-levels to university marked a considerable leap, and the workload only escalated as the year unfolded. At times, it was effortless to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially when observing others who seem more assured in their studies. However, I soon discerned that everyone faced similar challenges. If I grappled with a particular topic, others were likely experiencing the same.

The most crucial advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek help. This is a vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to peers or asking your professors for guidance, always feel free to inquire.

### Assistance from the Materials Science Department

A standout aspect of my initial year was the outstanding support from the department personnel. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, ensuring our voices were heard.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to build rapport with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make use of all the help available—you can never have too much support!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to recognize that the fears and uncertainties I experienced before starting university were mostly unfounded. An abundance of support exists, from both staff and fellow students, to help tackle any obstacles. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never alone. Amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my time at university, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, savor the experience!
