**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who was previously shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on my initial academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what were the key lessons from this year, and what is my current position?
### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
Creating friendships was one of the most anxiety-inducing situations I encountered. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On the first day of moving into my residence, just prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals who shared my experience.
So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that the first step is always worth taking. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease initially, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the transition between the first and second term was even more intense. Being thrust into this setting can sometimes shake your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, the chances are, others are too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance. This is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty for guidance!
### Assistance from the Faculty
Regarding faculty, the team in the Materials department is outstanding. They truly wish for your success and recognize the hurdles students confront. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open regarding any challenges we were facing. I didn’t fully utilize the support resources until later in the year, and I wish I had tapped into those opportunities sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to develop a better rapport with the faculty, which was immensely beneficial. There are many ways to engage with staff, and it is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway is to fully embrace the support available—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Remarks
In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I recognized that I was never isolated. I also learned how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while enjoying university life.
If you are about to embark on your own journey, remember: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
