**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding my upcoming journey. I was about to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and reserved, entering this new phase was quite daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and wonderful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I confronted initially was making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your greatest worries. On my very first day at student accommodation, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I locked myself in my room all day, shying away from socializing. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all started with stepping beyond my comfort zones and engaging in light conversations with others who shared my experiences.

What did I discover? Taking that first step is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared at the outset, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others await. Most importantly, be genuine. With a diverse student body, you’re sure to find companions who resonate with you.

### Navigating Academic Demands

Another critical challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the academic workload and the elevated difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university proved to be significant, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more substantial. There were moments when I felt completely swamped and questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others study assertively.

What supported me through this period was the realization that I wasn’t alone. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar challenges. The most beneficial thing I discovered was the importance of seeking help—be it from classmates or instructors. Requesting assistance is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s an essential component of development and education.

### The Value of Faculty Support

In terms of support, the academic staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and remain receptive to feedback and discussions concerning any issues we encounter. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not taking advantage of it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a leap of faith and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can profoundly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I have come to understand that the apprehension I experienced prior to commencing university was mostly unfounded. Many support systems are in place, ranging from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey in solitude. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to harmonize academic pressures with personal pleasures, even amidst exams and deadlines.

For anyone on the brink of beginning their university adventure: take that leap, seek help, and cherish the experience. You’ll develop in ways you could never have imagined.
