**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved individual, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you may share this concern. I vividly recall spending my initial day in student housing, retreating into my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, as I write this now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships of my life.
What was the vital lesson I picked up? Take the plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings are designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
The leap from A-levels to university was quite significant, and the academic workload escalated as the year unfolded. At times, it was easy to feel inundated or question my capabilities, particularly when observing others immersing themselves in their studies. However, I quickly understood that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I was struggling with a concept, chances were high that others were too.
The best piece of guidance I can offer? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, soliciting help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Encouragement from Faculty and Pastoral Support
One of the most reassuring elements of my course was the remarkable support from the faculty. They genuinely desire for students to flourish and remain receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any obstacles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral resources until further into the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner.
Initially, I took a chance by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Take full advantage of the resources available—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to commencing university were unfounded. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never truly isolated. Most importantly, I learned how to juggle academic demands with personal enjoyment, maximizing my experience at Imperial.
For anyone on the brink of starting their university adventure—embrace the hurdles, seek help when necessary, and above all, remain authentic to yourself. You will find your niche, just as I did.
