**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt incredibly daunting. Reflecting now, I perceive a year rich with personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and how do I see my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was the prospect of forging new friendships. If you are a future student, you might share this concern. On my first day in my new accommodation—just days before classes began—I was so anxious that I stayed in my room the entire day, hesitant to introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations.
So, what lessons did I take away? Firstly, taking that initial step is always fulfilling. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is to remain authentic. With a diverse student community, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the workload and heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more challenging. It’s quite easy to feel overwhelmed, particularly when you notice others studying and start questioning your own skills.
What aided me in this was understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. Developing the ability to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the aspects that impressed me this year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely cares about student success and acknowledges the hurdles we encounter. They ensure open lines of communication throughout the year and are always eager to assist.
While I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the proactive steps I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with lecturers and support staff, and doing this can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available resources and assistance—you can never receive too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I held before starting university were unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to peers, ensuring that no one has to feel isolated. I’ve learned to manage academic pressures while enjoying my university experience, and I’ve grown in unexpected ways.
For those embarking on their university journey, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, don’t hesitate to ask for help, and most importantly, be true to yourself. You are not alone, and this experience will shape you in ways you cannot predict.
