**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was coming. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what have I discovered, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too shy to reach out to anyone. However, looking at my life today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The key takeaway? Take that step forward. Even if you’re uncertain, numerous opportunities exist to connect with others through social gatherings and ice-breakers. Above all, be authentic. With a diverse student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another considerable hurdle was adjusting to the coursework and the heightened difficulty of university studies. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and shifting from the first to the second term felt even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others studying with assurance.

What supported me through this was the realization that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I found a concept challenging, there was a good chance others did as well. The best advice I can offer? Seek assistance. Whether from peers or professors, asking for support is one of the most important skills to cultivate during your first year.

### The Significance of Seeking Assistance

Speaking of support, the team in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback and concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I wish I had taken advantage sooner.

One of my best decisions was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with the staff, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can transform your university experience significantly. My biggest lesson? Utilize the available resources—there is no such thing as excessive support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the fears and anxieties I held before entering university were mostly baseless. With the appropriate backing from both faculty and fellow students, I was able to tackle the challenges and genuinely relish my journey. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that even amid exams and deadlines, there’s always an opportunity to enjoy life and create lasting memories.

If you are on the verge of starting university, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and welcome every chance that presents itself.
