**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year pursuing [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new chapter felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this is likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I felt so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I spent the entire day hidden in my room. However, reflecting now, I am proud to say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.
The vital lesson I discovered? Take that initial step. Even if you’re feeling anxious or doubtful, there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals with similar interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university coursework presented another notable challenge. The workload escalated, and the complexity of the material noticeably increased—especially between the first and second terms. There were moments when I questioned whether I was keeping pace, especially upon observing others studying with great intensity.
What aided me was the understanding that I was not alone in my struggles. If I found a concept challenging, it was likely that others did as well. The best decision I made was to seek help—whether it was from classmates or professors. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most important skills to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Care
A standout aspect of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievements. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a student well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. Building rapport with your professors and support personnel can be tremendously advantageous, and I strongly suggest utilizing the resources available to you.
### Important Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that many of my initial apprehensions were unwarranted. Whether it concerned making friends, managing coursework, or requesting support, I discovered that I was never truly isolated. University offers a space for growth, and though challenges will surface, there are always avenues for overcoming them. Above all, I’ve learned to strike a balance between academic demands and enjoyment, fully embracing my experience at Imperial.
For those about to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, reach out for help when necessary, and fully embrace the journey. You may be astonished at how much you evolve along the way.
