**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and questions about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and cautious, embarking on this new journey felt akin to jumping into deep water. Reflecting now, I realize that this year was packed with personal development, challenges, and many delightful experiences. But what insights have I gained from this venture, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Challenge of Making Connections
One of the foremost initial obstacles was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could very well be one of your primary worries. I recall spending my first day in student housing, retreating to my room, too fearful to emerge and introduce myself. However, as I write this, I can state with confidence that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all began with simple conversations with those who shared my feelings.
So, what did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and opportunities to connect with others. Most crucially, just be authentic—Imperial is teeming with a variety of individuals, and you’re certain to find friends who resonate with you.
### Adapting to Academic Rigors
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and the heightened difficulty of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when observing others studying and questioning if you’re keeping pace.
What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone faces comparable difficulties. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others share your confusion—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is one of the crucial lessons I gained during my first year. Whether reaching out to peers or requesting help from instructors, seeking support is integral to thriving.
### The Value of Faculty Support
One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the remarkable backing from the faculty. They genuinely wish for us to thrive and are aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t fully access the pastoral support until later into the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly improve your university experience. My most important insight? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the nerves and worries I had before beginning university were largely unfounded. There are extensive support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring no one ever needs to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with enjoying my university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my counsel is straightforward: take that leap, seek help whenever necessary, and relish the journey. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you might just have the most enjoyable chapter of your life.
