### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been timid and reserved, embarking on this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period brimming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my status now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of entering university was forging friendships. If you are a future student, this might resonate as one of your main worries too. On my debut day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too terrified to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking back, I can assuredly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it needed was a bit of casual conversation with others facing similar situations.

So, what have I taken away from this? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be your authentic self. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was getting used to the academic load and the rising complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated, particularly when you observe others studying and begin to question your capabilities.

What supported me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support is among the most valuable skills you can cultivate during your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

One of the greatest surprises of my initial year was the level of support provided by the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with the staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much help.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this year has demonstrated to me that the fears and apprehensions I harbored before starting university were largely unfounded. There are numerous support structures in place, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in navigating this journey. Most significantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone.

University presents its challenges—exams, deadlines, and moments of self-doubt—but it also offers remarkable opportunities for growth, friendships, and enjoyment. If I could offer one piece of advice to incoming students, it would be this: embrace the experience, take that initial leap, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll be astonished at how much you develop along the way.
