**Reflections on My First Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and concern about the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been timid and introverted, entering this new phase of my life felt daunting. Reflecting now, I see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered initially was making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a concern for you as well. I recall moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the start of term and spending an entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as I sit here now, I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings as me. The crucial lesson I gleaned? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is home to a diverse range of individuals, and you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was palpable, and the transition from first term to second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying fervently.

What proved beneficial for me was the realization that everyone encounters difficulties at times. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are in a similar boat. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the academic staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much help.

### Final Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has demonstrated that the apprehension I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There are numerous support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one ever has to feel isolated. More importantly, I’ve learned how to manage academic demands while savoring my time at university.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, seek assistance when you require it, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before you realize it, you’ll be reminiscing about a year filled with challenges, successes, and unforgettable experiences.
