**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding the future. I was preparing to start my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant concern for you as well. I recall my first day moving into student housing—I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself.

However, today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of my closest friends. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with initiating small conversations with others who were also new.

So, what has been my takeaway? Taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community, you’re bound to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the course’s workload and complexity. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition between the first and second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities, particularly when you see classmates studying and appearing more confident.

What aided me through this was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek help—whether from your fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most essential skills to master in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and comprehend the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered various forms of assistance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are several avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before university was mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating this transition. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to balance academic challenges with joy and fulfillment.

For those about to begin their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ll be amazed at how much you evolve throughout the journey.
