### Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, doubt, and concern about what the future held. I was just about to begin my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I confronted at the beginning of university was the challenge of making friends. If you are an incoming student, this may also be something you are concerned about. I recall spending my initial day in student housing, retreating to my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.
What’s the key lesson I gathered? Take that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a wealth of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial boasts a diverse community, and you’re guaranteed to find people who share your interests.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework represented a major leap, and the workload became increasingly demanding as the year continued. At times, self-doubt crept in, especially when I noticed others studying and felt I was falling behind. However, I soon understood that my peers were facing similar challenges. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were too.
My advice? Don’t shy away from asking for assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, seeking help is crucial for navigating the academic hurdles of your first year.
#### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most rewarding parts of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff are truly invested in students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had connected sooner.
Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to form connections with faculty members. This role illustrated the advantages of interacting with staff—not just for academic aid but also for personal growth. My biggest takeaway? Utilize the resources at your disposal. There’s no limit to the support you can receive!
#### Concluding Thoughts
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the fears I had—both prior to and during university—were largely unfounded. There are so many supportive systems available, from faculty to peers, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey in isolation. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic obligations while savoring university life.
To anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is to embrace challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ll experience growth in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about an amazing first year.
